Music and Poetry Through Do Re Mi
Experts agree, nowadays young minds can absorb and process more than we thought. From my observations of the children I teach, I agree. We need to move beyond “Row, Row, Row…” as a “fun” song and explore ways to build layers into it to teach the basics of music in order to develop the skills for music appreciation. We need to challenge young minds but in a fun and exiting way. Finding a balance between the challenge and fun is a question for all of us.
The good news is, with music you can’t go wrong.
In my program I bring music into classrooms as an educational, exciting, enriching, and engaging (into active listening) experience. The main theme promoted through songs is something that is a part of their daily lives already and fascinates them immensely: nature. I use real examples from nature for the lyrics and give them a musical expression in order to unlock their imagination and elevate their emotional response. With the unfolding drama of the story, the various elements of music come into play. It gives me opportunity to explore with them basics of music in a profound and exciting way. The songs are presented in combination with colorful illustrations to further reinforce nature’s message and stimulate the children’s imagination.
Using the Do Re Mi approach, students learn about rhythm, melody, harmony, form and other elements of music by singing, dancing, movement, acting and playing musical instruments.
Music has power and meaning that go beyond words. I have seen over the years how sharing music with children is simply one more way to give love and receive love. Music plays a powerful role in our lives. Through music, one better understands themselves and their feelings. My piano program is based on how children learn in general and applied especially music.. Playing and teaching music is such a rewarding experience for both the teacher and the student. I take great pride in delivering a great musical experience for my students. Music is a journey, and I know we can create one together!
